Ilorin – Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed optimism that his opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would defeat the national ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in kwara State in the 2019 elections.
Saraki, who is the leader of PDP in Kwara State and who doubles as the Director-General of the party’s campaign committee for the presidential election, said this on Sunday when the state chapter of the PDP inaugurated its campaign committee.
Under his leadership, the APC was able to win all the seats contested in the state and also delivered the state for Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the party.
Not long ago, the Senate President, with his associates, left the APC and returned to the now opposition PDP.
Saraki encouraged his supporters not to entertain any fears concerning the much talked about federal might.
He said with support from PDP supporters and God, the feat of 2015 would be repeated.
He said: “Don’t entertain any fear. They are saying federal might, we saw federal might in 2015 and did we not defeat them?
“Who did it then, are they some people from outside, are you not the one?”
The politician urged his supporters not to be discouraged from working for the PDP as an opposition party as he assured them that they would not suffer the kind of unfavourable fate they suffered in APC after helping the party to win election.
He disclosed that the party would adopt a new campaign strategy, different from the one used in 2015, to enable it succeed in the election.
Saraki, who pleaded for unity and cooperation of all members of the PDP in the campaign, said efforts would be made to appease all aspirants who “we had thought would emerge our candidates but who were not designed by God to be.
He charged members of the campaign committee to carry out their assignment with honesty and fear of God as he assured them of the required support.
The state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, who also spoke at the occasion, urged unity in the party as he enjoined those who lost out in the primaries to, in the belief that the winners won as designed by God, support the winners in the election proper.
Speaking on behalf of the campaign committee, the Director General, Sulyman Abubakar, who served as a minister under the PDP controlled federal government after Saraki had defected to the APC, said he was part of those Saraki, with his opposition party, defeated in 2015 but that now the Senate President was joining him in the realisation of a repeat of the feat.
He assured that his committee would not be discriminatory in its assignment and would discharge its duty with sincerity and fear of God.
The 42-member committee inaugurated by the state chairman of the party, Kola Shittu, include Isa Bawa, Ladi Edun, and Khalil Bolaji who are the Deputy Director General for the North, Central, and South Senatorial Districts of the state respectively.
