Plane Crashes Into Parked Helicopters Near Mount Everest, Kills 3 (Photos)

Three people have been killed and four injured after a plane crashed during takeoff near Mount Everest.

A small passenger plane skidded off the runway and smashed into a parked helicopter at the only airport in Nepal’s Everest region on Sunday.

Among the dead were the pilot of the plane and two police officers who were near the parked helicopter.

The injured were airlifted to Kathmandu by helicopter, Nepal police spokesman Uttam Raj Subedi said.

The crash occurred while the Summit Air plane was trying to take off from Lukla for Kathmandu, said aviation officials.

Following the crash, authorities suspended services at Tenzing Hillary Airport at Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest.

The airport is often referred to as the world’s most dangerous because of the short runway and difficult approach.

It’s open only to helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft and sits at 9,334 feet above sea level.

Buhari Leads Atiku With Nearly 500,000 Votes For 20 LGAs In Kastina

 

President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar

Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari has consolidated his lead over Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party in his native Katsina State with at least half a million votes, results declared so far show.

As of Monday morning, presidential election results from 20 out of the 34 local government areas in the state have been collated and Mr Buhari has so far garnered 640,254 votes against Mr Abubakar’s 160,265.

Results from 12 local governments released earlier showed that Mr Buhari was in clear lead and an additional results from eight local governments released Monday has Mr Buhari winning in all of them.

In Maiaduwa local government, Mr Buhari got 35,198 votes and Mr Abubakar got 8,256.

In Bindawa, Mr Buhari scored 35,030 votes against Mr Abubakar’s 9,623, while Mr Buhari got 25,699 votes against Mr Abubakar’s 6,647 votes in Dandume.

In Zango local government, Mr Buhari scored 25,207 and Mr Abubakar scored 6,891. In Dutsinma, Mr Buhari scored 35,700 and Mr Abubakar scored 10,440.

Nigeria election results: US speaks ahead of announcement of winner in Buhari, Atiku contest

The United States has called for calm as the nation awaits the winner of Nigeria’s presidential election.
The main contenders are incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Already, some states have released their official results. Figures show that it was keenly contested.

In a statement made available to DAILY POST by the US Embassy in Nigeria, Ambassador W. Stuart Symington, he congratulated the tens of millions of Nigerians who stood patiently in long lines to vote this week and the hundreds of thousands who worked together with INEC to conduct the elections.

He said: “As noted by many observer groups in their preliminary reports, this election was predominantly peaceful, and it was proof of the Nigerian people’s resolute commitment to choose their leaders.

“The peaceful achievement of millions was shadowed by the violence of a few. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives, and we urge all candidates to honor the Peace Accord they signed.

“All should convince those who support them to refrain from using force or violence to interfere with INEC. No one should break the law by announcing results before INEC does, or break the peace by claiming victory before the results are final.

“Everyone has a common interest in showing patience as INEC collates and announces the election results.”

Senegal President Sall Wins Re-Election In First Round

Senegal’s President Macky Sall won in the first round of the election Sunday, his prime minister said, although his two main challengers look set to contest the outcome.

“The results allow us to say that we should congratulate President Macky Sall on his re-election,” Prime Minister Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne said at midnight, predicting the incumbent would receive “at least 57 percent” of the vote.

His announcement hours after polls closed was greeted with cheers from supporters gathered at the headquarters of the presidential coalition in Dakar. Sall, who was seen there earlier in the evening, did not speak.

Official results from each region are not expected until Tuesday with a nationwide announcement by Friday midnight at the latest. If no one wins more than 50 percent a second-round runoff will be held on March 24.

Shortly before Dionne’s announcement, Sall’s two main challengers had warned against premature proclamations of victory.

“At this stage, a second round is announced and the results that are already compiled allow us to say so,” said former prime minister Idrissa Seck, who was making his third run for president.

“At the current state of the vote count, no candidate, I say no candidate, including myself, can claim to have won the presidential election,” taxman-turned MP Ousmane Sonko, who was also in the race, added at their joint press conference.

The other challengers, former foreign minister Madicke Niang and Issa Sall of the Unity and Assembly Party (PUR), were trailing far behind, according to the results.

Macky Sall had looked set to cruise to victory in the first round after his two key rivals, popular former Dakar mayor Khalifa Sall and Karim Wade, son of the previous president, were banned from running over graft convictions and he only faced four lesser-known candidates.

“At the end of this day, the Senegalese people alone will be the winner. And the president has chosen will equally have to be president of all Senegalese,” Sall said after voting Sunday.

A geologist by training, Sall took over as president in 2012 after beating his former mentor Abdoulaye Wade, and this time, he has campaigned for a second term championing his “Emerging Senegal” infrastructure project to boost economic growth.

“Victory in the first round is indisputable,” Sall told a recent Dakar campaign rally.

The EU observation mission said its overall assessment was “quite positive” among the polling stations it observed.

“There has been very little violence, very isolated incidents, which is very good news,” said Elena Valenciano, head of the mission.

Sall has made transport infrastructure a priority. But basic services, healthcare, and education often remain inadequate, sometimes triggering strikes and protests.

The other four candidates have campaigned hard against his plans for the second phase of his project, which critics see as a potential debt burden.

The five-horse race leaves voters with a limited choice compared to 2012 when 14 candidates vied for the top post.

A new system approved by parliament last year requires candidates demonstrate support from a minimum number of citizens and regions.

Once the regulations went into force, only seven candidates made the cut, but two of them — Khalifa Sall and Karim Wade — were then disqualified.

Both men were barred over their convictions for misuse of public funds, which they say were engineered to bar them from the race.

Senegal has a population of 16 million but only 6.7 million were registered to vote in the West African nation which gained independence from France in 1960.

Senegal has known two peaceful power transfers in 2000 and 2012 and has never experienced any coups. But election campaigns are often marred by charges of corruption, disinformation and sometimes violence.

For polling day, some 8,000 police were deployed throughout urban areas alongside an unspecified number of civilian security staff, officials said.

And around 5,000 observers — including some from the European Union — were monitoring proceedings, the interior ministry said.

Atiku Takes Early Lead In Rivers… See Details

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, has taken an early lead in Saturday’s presidential poll results of eight out of nine Local Government Areas (LGA’s) of Rivers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports on Monday in Port Harcourt that the results were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) electoral officers with support of the collation officers from the LGA’s.

The results, which are still being collated across the state, showed the former Vice President leading in Oyigbo, Omuma, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Obio/Akpor, Eleme, Andoni, Gokana and Etche LGAs.

The results also showed the candidate of the All Prorgressives Congress (APC) and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari trailing behind with a lead in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of the state.

The results from 13 other LGAs including Port Harcourt, Ikwerre, Emohua, Degema, Tai and Opobo/Nkoro, are however, yet to be announced.

Others are Okirika, Ogu/Obolo, Khana, Abia/Odua, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Akoku-Toru and Bonny LGAs

Atiku got a total of 222,045 in the nine LGAs, while Buhari got 71,734 votes.

The breakdown of the results showed that Atiku won in Oyigbo with 16,102 as against 3,520 votes of Buhari while in Omuma, he got 15,322 as against 2, 494 of the incumbent President.

The results further showed that Atiku won in Ogba/Egbeme/Ndoni with 28,536, Obio/Akpor with 69,981, Eleme with 8,464, Andoni with 72,330, Etche with 11,135 and Gokana with 10,276.

Buhari polled 18,180 votes to take lead in Asari-Toru while Atiku got 3,175.

Meanwhile the results of the National Assembly in the state are yet to be released.

NAN also reports that the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, delivered his Andoni LGA to Atiku with 72,330 votes.

The Collation Officer for Andoni, Prof Prince Oghenekaro, while announcing the results, said that Ward 6 of the LGA had no election as election materials were allegedly carted away by hoodlums.

Also, Dr Godwin Ihenacho, a Collation Officer for Etche LGA, said that there was no election in Ward 14 of the area due to hijack of election materials.

The Collation Officer for Obio/Akpor LGA, Prof. Arthur Nwafor, said the result so far was from 13 out of 17 wards.

He added that four wards, 1, 3, 15 and 16, which generated a total of 4,000 votes, were not collated due to security situation in the wards at the time of collation.

The state Returning Officer of INEC, Prof. Aniefiok Essien, however, said that the results from the remaining LGA’s would be announced as soon as they arrived.

Lagos Election Results: INEC announces results of 15 LGAs

President Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is in early lead as INEC has collated presidential election results of 15 local government areas in Lagos state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that APC won in most of the local government results declared so far in the much awaited collation.

The exercise commenced at the INEC Office, Yaba and it has been nonstop since Sunday night.

NAN reports that the President defeated his closest rival of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the Apapa, Ikorodu, Ibeju-Lekki, Ikeja, Epe, Badagry and Lagos Island local government areas election results announced and submitted.

Other local governments where the APC led are Agege, Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos Mainland, Mushin, Oshodi-Isolo.

However, PDP defeated APC in Surulere, Eti-Osa and Ojo in the results declared as a few minutes to 8.0 a.m on Monday.

The election results were presented and accepted by the state collation officer, Prof. Felix Salako, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun.

The collation officer for Apapa LGA, Abiodun Babalola, who read the results, said that APC polled 18,170 votes while PDP scored 11, 295 votes in the council.

Apart from the People Coalition Party (PCP) that scored 238 votes and African Democratic Congress (ADC) that polled 108 votes, all other 69 political parties scored less than 100 votes each in the council.

Babalola said out of the total registered voters of 186, 649, only 33, 095 were accredited for the poll.

He said that the total valid votes were 30, 680, the rejected votes were 1914 while the total votes cast were 32, 594.

The collation officer for Ibeju-Lekki LGA, Prof. Abduhamid Suleiman, said that APC polled 12,179 votes while the closest rival party, PDP scored 9, 222 votes.

Apart from the Accord Party that also polled 2,168 votes, PCP that polled 170 votes, African Action Congress (AAC) that scored 111, all other parties got below 100 votes each.

According to Suleiman, out of the total registered voters of 109, 731, only 26,568 were accredited for the poll.

He said that the total valid votes were 24, 668, the rejected voted were 1327 while the total votes cast were 25, 995.

He added that the total valid votes were 36, 021, the rejected voted were 1967 while the total votes cast were 37, 988.

For Epe LGA, the collation officer, Dr Babatunde Adeoye, said that APC polled 17, 710 votes while the PDP scored 13, 306 votes.

Apart from PCP that scored 185 and AAC that got 53 votes, every other party got below 50 votes in the local government.

Also, the collation officer for Ikorodu LGA, the Collation Officer, Ilupeju Akanbi, said that APC polled 40, 719 votes while the PDP got 21,252 votes.

Apart from AAC that polled 410 votes, ADC that scored 184 votes, ANN that got 196 votes, DPP that polled 109 votes, PCP that had 375 votes and YPP that polled 215 votes, other parties got belowe 100 votes.

The Collation Officer for Badagry LGA, Prof.Adetokunbo Demiloye, said that APC polled 21, 417 votes while PDP polled 17, 939.

The Collation Officer for Lagos Island LGA, Dr Adepoju Tejumade while presenting the council results said that the APC polled 27, 452 votes while the PDP got 7396 votes.

While AAC scored 192, PCP scored 191 votes while all other political parties scored less than 100 votes each in the council.

According to Tejumade, out of the total registered voters of 194, 738, only 38, 285 were accredited for the elections.

Apart from AAC which got 212 votes, ADC that polled 109, PCP which got 384 and SNC that polled 155, all other parties score less than 100 votes.

Prof. Carol Opara, the Ikeja LGA Collation Officer said that APC polled 23, 638 votes while the PDP 21, 518 votes in the council.

Apart from AAC that also polled 566 votes, ANN which scored 492, PCP that polled 413 votes, YPP that got 503 votes, ADC that got 108 votes and FRESH Party that got 123 votes, all parties got less than 100 votes.

In Ifako Ijaiye LGA, APC polled 33, 419 votes while the PDP scored 18,100 votes while in Mushin LGA, APC polled 43, 543 and the PDP had 20, 277.

In Oshodi/Isolo LGA, the APC polled 29, 860 and PDP polled 28, 806, whereas in Lagos Mainland, APC polled 22,684 and PDP 15, 137.

In Agege LGA, APC scored 36, 443 and PDP got 16, 497 whereas in Surulere LGA, APC polled 30, 621 while the PDP garnered 31,603.

Meanwhile, in Ojo and Eti-Osa LGAs, PDP polled 29, 019 votes and 25, 216 votes respectively to defeat APC candidate who polled 24, 333 and 20, 962 respectively.

As at the time of filing this report, the centre was still awaiting results from Alimosho, Kosofe, Somolu and Amuwo-Odofin LGAs but that of Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGA had been brought and getting set for presentation as at 7:45am.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 73 presidential candidates participated in the Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections held across the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In the results declared so far by various returning officers, Buhari led his closest rival, Abubakar in the state with a wide margin

Earlier in his address of welcome before the collation commenced, Mr Sam Olumekun, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), commended the security agencies for the good job and called for sustenance of adequate security throughout the exercise.

Olumekun, who noted that nothing could be achieved without peace, however,frowned at the pockets of violence that greeted Saturday election in some areas of the state.

The INEC boss, who noted that violence, was not acceptable, urged stakeholders to channel their grievances to appropriate quarters.

The collation had in attendance heads and representatives of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) members headed by the Lagos State Police Commissioner CP Zubairu Muazu.

Rule on share transmission to reduce N100bn unclaimed dividend

Domestic retail investors have commended the decision of the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, to initiate rules that will facilitate transmission of investments of a deceased shareholder to the next-of-kin, saying that it will further reduce the incidence of unclaimed dividends currently put at over N100 billion in the market.

Part of the challenges and drawbacks to investing in equities market has been that of transmission of shares from one investor to another and claiming of investments of a deceased investor by the family members. Transmission of shares occurs when the shares of a deceased shareholder are inherited or bequeathed to an heir or personal representative of the deceased shareholder. It takes place in case of death, insanity or insolvency of a member or, where the member is a company, on its liquidation.

SECAccording to the SEC, it has come up with a two-pronged approach to address the intractable challenges associated with share transmission, which involves developing rules that will stipulate the time-frame for the transfer as well as the fee structure.

The Commission also said it will engage probate registries around the country as part of the process with a view to enlighten them on the workings of the capital market and reduce the cumbersome process.

“We had meeting with registrars some time ago and a lot of them complained about the problem they had at the probate registries. So, we thought that in the same way that we have been engaging with judges when we have Judges Conference and we enlighten them about the workings of the capital market and importance of it, we thought that we should also extend the same measure to the probate registries around the nation so that capital market issues will be attended to as soon as possible”, said the Commission’s Acting Director General, Ms. Mary Uduk.

Commending the development, Moses Igbrude, General Secretary, Independent Shareholders Association of Nigeria, ISAN, said that implementation of the rule would deepen the capital market and help to reduce unclaimed dividend. He advised that efforts should be made to ensure safety of the process in order not to transfer such shares to wrong people.

“It is a good development to hear that SEC is now alive to its responsibilities by looking into areas that were disincentive to the investing public and l hope their search light continues to beam on cloudy areas in the capital market,” said Gbadebo Olatokunbo, Co-Founder Nigeria Shareholders Solidarity Association, NSSA.

Mr. Patrick Ajudua, National Chairman, New Dimension Shareholders Association, NDSA, stated that the introduction would consolidate the success story of e-dividend mandate that has contributed to reduction in unclaimed dividend, adding that what is required is the formulation and amendment of existing laws for smooth implementation of the policy.

Collation officer arrested in Plateau for attempting to escape without announcing result

A mild drama unfolded in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau, yesterday, when a Collation Officer, Prof. Musa Izam of University of Jos, attempted to escape declaring results for Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly, NASS, elections in the area.

INECThe Professor of Physics was in the midst of results collation when he took excuse from party agents, INEC officials and observers to go an ease himself.

Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bokkos Local Government Area, Mr Michael Abi, said little did they know collation of results from the 12 wards of the council had been concluded waiting to be announced when the professor excused himself.

He said: “We, however, smelt a rat and asked some people to monitor him. And true to our fears and suspicion, the man ran into a waiting vehicle nearby and zoomed off.

“We had to chase after them as the vehicle sped towards Barikin Ladi Local Government Area en route to Jos and caught up with them at Maikatako near Kuba village in Bokkos.

“Guess who took him away in that car, one of the Special Assistants to Gov. Simon Lalong on Security Matters, whose name I won’t want to mention.

“We brought them back to the collation centre only for the professor to apologise to everybody in the hall over his actions.”

Former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Jonathan Mawuyau, also apologised on behalf of the don, asking that he be allowed to continue with compilation of the results for final announcement of winners of the elections in the area.

“We could not believe our eyes when we saw such a strange attitude from a learned and a whole Professor of Physics who works with a reputable institution like University of Jos,” Solomon Maren lamented over the development.

“In fact, it is like a film that we use to watch. Well, the good thing is that he is back and I think we are ready to conclude the compilation and for the result to be announced to us.

“Nevertheless, all eyes were on the collation officer for him to do the needful without springing another surprise on the results collation and announcement of winner of polls,” Maren said.

Killings: US calls for end to violence in Rivers

As Wike vows to get justice for victims

PORT HARCOURT—The United States Consul-General to Nigeria, John Bray has called for an end to the violence and deaths associated with the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Rivers State.

Wike and AmaechiAddressing journalists at Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday, after a meeting with Governor Ezenwo Wike of the state, the Diplomat decried the violence that greeted the polls in some parts of the state.

It will be recalled that soldiers allegedly unleashed violence on Abonnema in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state where 15 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members were killed.  The military also killed two PDP agents in Emohua Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

Collation underway as INEC’s ad hoc staff killed, another arrested

He said: “I am here as an international observer.  We have been watching elections in Rivers State.

“I am not here to grade elections or anything like that. I am just here to say that there has been enough violence.

“Enough people have died. I am here today to speak with all the different candidates and party leaders.”

Wike to seek justice for victims

Meanwhile, Governor Wike said that the Rivers State Government will pursue justice for all those killed in cold blood by soldiers of the Nigerian Army in Abonnema and other towns  during Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.

Wike had alleged that the soldiers were used by the All Progressives Congress, APC, to unleash mayhem on PDP members in the state.

Addressing journalists, yesterday at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said that all those involved in the killing of innocent Rivers people to further the Presidential ambition  of their benefactor will not go unpunished.

He said: “Let it be known that those who masterminded the murderous assault on Abonnema and other communities in Rivers State last Saturday have bloodstains on their hands, for which they are all answerable before the Almighty God.

“I wish to assure all and sundry that we shall as a government pursue justice for the families of the victims against the perpetrators of the mayhem, killings and destructions in Abonema, Buguma, Degema and other places no matter how powerful they may seem and how long it may take.”
